About this river map

This atlas follows the Green River from Sand Wash to Swaseys, about 84 river miles through Desolation and Gray canyons in Utah.

A long river, in three stretches

The Upper view follows the opening river miles to Jack Creek. Deso follows the central canyon stretch; Gray continues through the lower canyon and the final Green River Daily reach. The map division near mile 58.7 follows the adjoining canyon endpoints in USGS geographic names; the boundaries are approximate.

How to explore

Search by name, nickname, or river mile, choose a stretch, and tap a marker. Every selected rapid or riffle opens an aerial close-up and an authentic USGS topographic view. Previous and Next place follow the river downstream.

The map and the archive

The collection records a June 11–19, 2011 Desolation Canyon journey. This atlas is a geographic reference for the full corridor. It does not place the archive photographs or establish the trip’s daily itinerary or camps.

Reference places and river miles

The river follows connected USGS National Hydrography Dataset flowlines. USGS GNIS supplies landmark locations; public RiverBrain records supply river-specific rapid and access points. This edition includes 41 named rapids and riffles, three access points, and eight landmarks. It is a selection from a corridor with many more riffles.

Miles count downstream from Sand Wash along the river line, adjusted to BLM’s rounded 84-mile trip and 8.5-mile final Green River Daily stretch. Nefertiti access is placed at approximate explorer mile 75.5. These miles differ from the decreasing historic Green River mileage system and from individual guidebooks.

Class ranges are reference ratings from the linked RiverBrain pages. BLM reports that Joe Hutch Canyon / Cow Swim can become substantially harder at high water. Aerial dates vary, and the callouts show representative geography rather than surveyed hazards or a route through a rapid. Use current BLM access information and a current river guide for trip planning.
